5 Tricks to Teach Your Dog That Will Impress Everyone

Training doesn’t have to be a serious, stern process. In fact, the more fun you make it, the faster your dog will learn—and the more you’ll enjoy it too. Dogs are natural learners when they’re engaged and having a good time. Here’s how to bring more joy into your training sessions.

1. Spin

Hold a treat in front of your dog’s nose and slowly move it in a circle. As your dog follows the treat, they’ll spin around. Once they complete the circle, reward and add the cue word “spin.” With practice, they’ll twirl on command.

2. Shake Hands

Start by gently lifting your dog’s paw while saying “shake.” Reward them immediately. After a few repetitions, wait for them to offer the paw themselves. Soon they’ll be greeting friends with a paw shake like a pro.

3. Speak

Catch your dog when they bark naturally and say “speak.” Reward right after. Over time, your pup will learn to bark on cue—a fun trick, but also useful if you want to teach a “quiet” command later.

4. Roll Over

Begin with your dog in a “down” position. Hold a treat close to their nose and slowly move it in a circle over their head. Their body will naturally follow the motion, rolling onto their back and around. Reward at each step until they can roll fully.

5. Play Dead

Start with your dog lying down. Use a treat to lure them onto their side, then add the cue word “bang!” or “play dead.” Reward generously. With a little practice, you’ll have a dramatic performer on your hands.

Tips for Trick Training

  • Keep sessions short and positive.

  • Break tricks into small steps and reward progress.

  • Use lots of encouragement—your dog should think tricks are playtime, not work.

Teaching tricks is about more than impressing your friends. It keeps your dog mentally sharp, gives them confidence, and deepens the connection you share. Plus, it’s guaranteed to bring a smile to everyone watching.
